Steelers President Provides Bleak Outlook On Antonio Brown’s Future With Team
11 January 2019, 05:28 | Henrietta Morgan
Why an Antonio Brown trade makes sense for the Lions … and why it doesn’t
The Pittsburgh Steelers have no plans to release disgruntled wide receiver Antonio Brown, but owner Art Rooney II doesn't envision him being with the team when players report to training camp in July. "We'll look at all the options".
"Whether the situation can be reconciled and have him back on the team next year, we're a long way away from thinking that can happen".
"All options are on the table", Rooney said.
And that has now made an offseason for the Steelers that already was sure to be littered with questions about how to prop open that closing window of opportunity a little more ... shall we say ... drama-filled.
It was reported that Brown had a knee injury that week, but that excuse turned out to be bunk.
Some context: Brown reportedly requested a trade early last week after he sat out of the Steelers season finale, following a dispute with Ben Rothlisberger.
"The bottom line is we were playing a significant game and he didn't do a good enough job of communicating of being available in the hours leading up to that performance", Tomlin said at the time.
According to league regulations, nothing can be done with Brown until March 13, the first day of the league's new year. Brown's $2.5 million roster bonus due March 17 would incentivize the Steelers to deal him.
Rooney said in the interview that salary cap implications would not "box us into anything".
The report comes from Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, who tweeted out the following on Thursday afternoon.
On top of everything that is going on, Rooney also revealed that Brown has refused to return repeated phone calls from him and coach Mike Tomlin.
