Trump Declares ‘America Will Never Be a Socialist Country’ in SOTU

Facing Divided Congress, Trump Calls for Unity

Trump Makes Last Appeal for Wall Funding in State of Union Address

Sparring over the president's proposed border wall led to a record 35-day partial shutdown of the federal government over Congress' inability to pass a spending package that included the funds he has claimed is necessary to build his wall along the southern border.

Trump is making his second State of the Union address with a new backdrop: for the first time a Democratic Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi of California, will be looking over Trump's shoulder as he speaks in the House chamber of the U.S. Capitol.

Pelosi and Trump have repeatedly clashed in recent weeks. Trump's approval rating sank steadily during the shutdown, as opinion polls showed more Americans blamed him than Democrats for the impasse that resulted in 800,000 federal workers being furloughed or forced to work without pay. He said the US has "the hottest economy anywhere in the world". Democrats have refused to acquiesce to his demands for a border wall, and Republicans are increasingly unwilling to shut down the government to help him fulfill his signature campaign pledge.

"Tonight, we renew our resolve that America will never be a socialist country", he concluded, to widespread applause. The U.S. economy added 2.6 million jobs in 2018, the highest figure since 2015.

Heard on the Hill suspects that route was out of habit for Trump Jr., given that Paul Ryan inhabited that office when Republicans controlled the House.

Anthony Davis still not interested in long-term deal with Celtics
He has no plans to sign an extension with any team this summer, expecting to do so when he becomes a free agent. Anthony Davis only has a few days before the February 7 trade deadline in order to get his wish of being traded.

"To build on our incredible economic success, one priority is paramount: Reversing decades of calamitous trade policies", he will say.

"In the past, most of the people in this room voted for a wall".

The White House is also considering imposing tariffs of up to 25 percent on imports of automobiles and vehicle parts. "This is wrong, unfair and together we can stop it".

On foreign policy, Trump announced that he will meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this month in Vietnam to, in his words, "continue our historic push for peace on the Korean Peninsula".

"Here, in the United States, we are alarmed by new calls to adopt socialism in our country", Trump continued, to a smattering of boos.

Chanting anti-government slogans, they were heading toward the Place de la République , in the northeast of the city center. The package, estimated at 10 billion euros ($11.46 billion), includes a 100-euro monthly increase to the minimum wage.

Trump has also announced plans to withdraw the 2,000 US troops from Syria, saying Islamic State has largely been defeated there.

Trump will speak about the future of the ongoing conflicts overseas in Syria and Afghanistan.

"I'm disappointed by the president's approach to our problems", she said.

"Tonight, Donald Trump spoke of "choosing greatness" but there is nothing great about his administration's repeated choices to abandon USA leadership in the global fight against climate change, to eliminate vital protections for public lands and to roll back the clean air and water safeguards that make our communities safe and healthy places to live", said League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski, who attended the speech as a guest of New York Congressman Paul Tonko, in a statement.
