Baseball Hall of Famer Frank Robinson died Thursday after battling a long illness at his home in California, Major League Baseball announced.

Frank Robinson, a former Baltimore Oriole and Hall of Famer, has died at the age of 83.

An outfielder and first baseman, Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982 in his first year of eligibility. The 12-time All-Star is the only player in MLB history to win an MVP Award in both the National and American League.

Robinson was the 1961 NL MVP after batting.323 with 37 homers and 124 RBIs for the pennant-winning Reds, and reached career highs in runs (134) and RBIs (136) in 1962. He won the American League's Triple Crown in 1966 when he hit.316 with 49 home runs and 122 RBI.

Robinson also led the Orioles to another World Series title in 1970.

RBI cuts repo rate in first policy review under new governor
The rupee weakened to 71.69 to the dollar immediately after the announcement but did strengthen to 71.42 soon. The MPC voted 4:2 in favour of the rate cut , while the decision to change policy stance was unanimous.

Robinson starred in the major leagues for two decades, and later became the first black manager in the history of the MLB.

Robinson went on to run the dugouts of the Giants (becoming the first black manager in the National League), Orioles, and Expos/Nationals. He was the manager for the Montreal Expos when the franchise relocated to Washington, D.C. and became the Nationals in 2005. The Reds, Orioles and Indians have retired Robinson's No. 20 and saluted him with statues at their ballparks.

On Dec. 9, 1965, the Cincinnati Reds traded Robinson to the Orioles for pitchers Milt Pappas, Jack Baldschun and outfielder Dick Simpson.

"Frank Robinson might have been the best I ever saw at turning his anger into runs".

"So honored to not just have known you Frank as a great man, manager, person, and human being, but who I truly called a good friend and someone who I honestly played as hard as I could for, hoping you would respect me back", Schneider wrote on Instagram.

He recalled that he was in a coffee shop when a friend congratulated him for the nominations but left out the bad news. But the truth is, even if I got the nomination, that should not give me any sense of whether I did my job or not.

His legacy, however, was cemented the day he simply stood in the dugout at old Cleveland Stadium as the first black manager in Major League Baseball. In his first at-bat as their player-manager, he hit a home run.

Robinson had coached for the Orioles and worked in their front office when he became their manager in 1988 after the team opened at 0-6.

Honored as a trailblazer: Robinson was widely honored, from the earliest days of his playing career through recent years.

The American League consists of the following teams: Baltimore Orioles; Boston Red Sox; Chicago White Sox; Cleveland Indians; Detroit Tigers; Houston Astros; Kansas City Royals; Los Angeles Angels; Minnesota Twins; New York Yankees; Oakland Athletics; Seattle Mariners; Tampa Bay Rays; Texas Rangers; and Toronto Blue Jays.

Robinson was 1,065-1,176 over his 16 years as a manager, and though he never made the playoffs, he also mentored Dusty Baker and Joe Morgan, who would follow in his footsteps.
