Spotify will start suspending ad-blocking users without warning

This shouldn't be confused with the "Active Listening" feature Spotify has been testing in some territories since last August, which lets listeners choose to skip some ads if they don't want to listen to them.

Spotify has updated its terms of service to include a clause which bans the use of ad-blockers by users.

It also states further down that violations of the guidelines may result in immediate termination or suspension of one's Spotify account. But for some apparently nearly the entire catalogue of music in the world for free isn't enough and they need to block ads - essentially killing any profit for the Spotify team and most importantly the artists and labels. Until now, Spotify users who employed ad-circumventing software had their accounts suspended and were send a warning via email. The company only offers ad-free streaming to paid users.

Furthermore, a spokesperson says Spotify has "multiple detection measures in place monitoring consumption on the service to detect, investigate and deal with [artificial manipulation of streaming activity]".

Around two million Spotify users are thought to be blocking adverts by using modified players to listen to the service. No warnings, and no second chances. Premium Spotify accounts aren't targeted by the new rules since the service only displays ads to free subscribers. The company aims to achieve it with recent acquisitions of podcast companies Gimlet Media and Anchor.
