A snowy road

A California Highway Patrol officer holds a newborn baby who was found on a road. "This female got out of her auto, asked the man if he could help her and asked him to take her child", the police spokesperson said.

A newspaper carrier came across an abandoned newborn Monday morning in the middle of a Madera road. Fuentes reportedly brought the baby inside and unzipped the onesie to warm her, and noticed the umbilical cord.

KFSN-TV reports the hours-old baby was wearing only a onesie when the newspaper carrier, Aurelio Fuentes, found her a short time later on the center line of the road in Madera County in Central California.

'I approached slowly next thing you know I see its red you can see the face I saw a face.

Fuentes told the Fresno Bee her umbilical cord was still attached.

Fuentes called authorities and the baby girl was rushed to a hospital.

Fuentes brought the girl into his vehicle, where he called 911.

Authorities are now looking for the newborn's mother.

The child will be placed in the care of child protective services when she is fully recovered.

According to Madera County Undersheriff Tyson Pogue, a man was walking or jogging eastbound on Avenue 13 1/2 when he was approached by a Hispanic female in her early 20s driving a white, smaller SUV.

Madera County Sheriff's Office are now working to track down a woman who is thought to have dropped the baby off at the spot. Ironically, there was a staffed fire station within a mile or two, and Valley Children's Hospital is very nearby.

She was said to have been driving a white SUV but details of her physical description are "unknown". Under the law, parents or people with lawful custody of a child can surrender an infant within 72 hours of birth at designated sites, which are typically hospitals or fire stations.
