Enlarge It is nearly time for crewed flights on SpaceX's Dragon
In 2014, NASA selected two USA companies, SpaceX and Boeing, to develop spacecraft to shuttle its astronauts to and from the International Space Station. "So we'll keep working and I'm sure we'll be successful in getting their concurrence", Shireman said at a press briefing with NASA and SpaceX officials, dedicated to the upcoming Crew Dragon launch, on Friday.
It would be the first launch of USA astronauts from US soil in eight years. The Russian space agency corrected the problem, revised the launch schedule and Koch, already in training for a downstream flight, was added to the mission.
Prior to the review, NASA had telegraphed that the mission would likely stick to the March 2 date announced in early February.
SpaceX crewed mission Demo-2 is now slated for July 2019 and Boeing's Starliner mission for August 2019.
"So now we're going back and we're proving to ourselves that this breaking is so unlikely it's not going to be a concern". "We think we have sufficient rationale for that".
"The vehicle is not totally qualified for a crew flight, but we know the hardware is good enough for this flight", said Bill Gerstenmaier, NASA's chief of human spaceflight.
Its launch atop the Falcon 9 rocket for the unmanned test mission is scheduled for 2:48 am EST (07:48 GMT) on March 2. Its launch will be called Demo-1, or DM-1. Two NASA astronauts will be in the spacecraft then, Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken. The private company had to overhaul its cargo capsule for astronauts.
This will be the first time a commercially built and operated American rocket and spacecraft designed for humans will launch to the space station, since the retirement of the space shuttle in 2011, NASA said on Friday.
The SpaceX Demo-1 launch is one of the final steps before Crew Dragon can carry NASA astronauts to space.
If those flights go well, operational US crew rotation flights could begin before the end of the year.
Nasa awarded Space Exploration Technologies Corp. and Boeing Co. a combined US$6.8 billion in September 2014 to revive the US's ability to fly to the space station without buying seats on Russian capsules.
Its aim is to provide crucial data on the performance of the Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft, hopefully leading to NASA certifying SpaceX's crew transportation system for carrying astronauts.
High Winds Create ‘Ice Tsunami’ in NY
That ice then flowed downstream and caused concerns about possible ice-jam flooding on Cayuga Island in Niagara Falls. The tsunami was caused by high winds pushing large chunks of ice over a retaining wall.
