Cities ranked by particulate matter pollution scores
Seven of the top 10 most polluted cities in the world are in India, according to a new study by Swiss-based IQAir AirVisual and non-profit organisation Greenpeace.
Gurugram, a city in Haryana that also comes under the National Capital Region, has a particulate matter (PM) 2.5 average of 138.5 in 2018.
Seven of the top 10 polluted cities in 2018 were in India, including Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Bhiwandi, Noida, Patna and Lucknow.
Moreover, in the wake of another report given out by Greenpeace on pollution, even if the country reduces PM10 levels that it targets to accomplish by 2024, India will still have 139 cities with hazardous pollution levels.
The report showed Bangladesh was the most polluted country on average, closely followed by Pakistan and India. Three other Indian cities joined Faisalabad, Pakistan, in the top five.
The WHO global air pollution database which listed 14 Indian cities among the 15 most polluted cities in the world past year, was a matter of shame for the country and its government.
But 47 capital cities were identified has having a "moderate" or worse risk of people developing health problems, with six ranking in the "unhealthy" category, meaning an 'increased likelihood of adverse effects and aggravation to the heart and lungs'.
India tops China in the category of world's most polluted cities.
The report saiddata was sourced from a range of government monitoring sources.
Productivity losses from pollution covers almost 8.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in India, as per the World Bank analysis.
In a statement released with the figures, the executive director of Greenpeace Southeast Asia, Yeb Sano said, "This has enormous impacts, on our health and on our wallets".
"In addition to human lives lost, there's an estimated cost of US$225 billion (S$305 billion) in lost labour, and trillions in medical costs".
