New Program to Accelerate Expansion of Offshore Wind Power in Developing Countries

New Program to Accelerate Expansion of Offshore Wind Power in Developing Countries

In 2017, the global offshore wind power installations reached 4,334 MW, thereby increasing the cumulative installed capacity of offshore wind capacity to 18,814 MW.

The government said the deal "will mean for the first time in United Kingdom history there will be more electricity from renewables than fossil fuels, with 70 per cent of British electricity predicted to be from low carbon sources by 2030".

According to the latest quarterly figures from the UK's Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, the share of low carbon electricity generation accounted for a record high 56 percent in the third quarter of 2018, up from 54 percent in the same period of 2017, thanks to higher power generation from renewable sources.

It is hoped the green power "revolution" will be helped by a new deal between the Government and industry to develop the supply chain and boost global exports.

A partnership between Government and industry will support smaller supply chain companies to export for the first time, to help boost global exports to areas including Europe, Japan, and the United States five-fold to £2.6 billion a year by 2030. This would protect pay and conditions for workers across the offshore wind supply chain, from seafarers transporting infrastructure and expertise to the skilled women and men required to install wind turbines and connect them to the grid.

The Crown Estate will also be releasing new seabed land from 2019 for future offshore wind projects.

The program will convene developing country governments, commercial developers, development partners, and wind energy experts to raise awareness around offshore wind opportunities in emerging markets and lay the groundwork for a pipeline of new projects that could be supported by World Bank or IFC financing.

The UK is already the world leader in offshore wind, with more capacity than any other country, the biggest offshore wind farms and the most powerful turbines.

The UK's offshore trade union RMT has raised concerns over the impact on workers from today's Government offshore wind energy strategy.

The offshore wind industry has grown almost five-fold since 2011, with 23 gigawatts installed at the end of 2018 and a large volume of planned projects in Europe, China and the United States.

But US and Chinese negotiators remain at odds over US demands that China review its preferential treatment of state-owned firms. He said Trump was determined to push for a comprehensive deal that addressed structural issues with China's policies.

"The truth however is that to date the so-called "green jobs revolution" has largely been a figment of the imagination of politicians of all parties and those pushing for an over reliance on renewables - with all the risks to our future energy supply and economic competitiveness". Companies are burgeoning in clusters, creating new centres of excellence in this clean growth boom.
