Windows 10 is now on 800 million devices – should hit a billion in 2020
Still, Microsoft is finally approaching its goal, as Windows 10 has now surpassed 800 million installs.
"Thank you to all our customers and partners for helping us achieve 800 million #Windows10 devices and the highest customer satisfaction in the history of Windows", Yusif Mehdi, a Microsoft vice president, tweeted. According to Computerworld's latest calculation, based on analytics vendor Net Applications' measurement of Windows 10's user share and Microsoft's oft-cited contention that 1.5 billion machines run Windows, at the end of February, Windows 10's share of all Windows stood at 46.1%, which represented approximately 691 million systems.

That 800 million number counts desktop PCs, laptops, smartphones and hybrid devices like the Surface and the Xbox One. The significant aspect of Windows 10 is that customers are provided with two major updates every year instead of monthly and periodic update rollouts.

It took nearly three years and eight months for Windows 10 to reach the goal of 800 million after it was released in July 2015, Xinhua news agency reported. Microsoft's latest Windows 10 October 2019 Update hasn't helped with that image since the company had to pull the update back after releasing it to the public and receiving data loss complaints.
Windows 10 was originally offered as a free upgrade to users who were running Windows 7 and 8.1 and performed the switch in the first 12 months after the launch. The failure of the mobile version also meant that other operating systems such as Android were dominating the phone market. WIndows 10 is now on 40 percent pf PCs according to Net Applications but Windows 7 is still in second place with 38.5 percent.
