The two gunmen, wearing masks and hoodies, walked into the Raul Brasil school in Suzano, Sao Paulo State, Brazil, and started shooting at 9:30 a.m. when students were on a snack break.

She said the attackers had guns and knives, and when she ran to the principal's office, she saw many dead people.

Marcelo Salles, commander of police forces in Sao Paulo state, spoke just outside the school and said that in his over three decades of service, he had "never seen anything like this, it was an unspeakably brutal crime".

School shootings are rare in Brazil, even though the country is one of the world's most violent, with more annual homicides than any other. Five children are reportedly among the dead, as well as a school employee and a passerby.
