Passengers from some 35 countries were on board the Boeing 737 MAX 8 jetliner when it crashed shortly after takeoff on Sunday morning from Addis Ababa en route to Nairobi, Kenya.

There were 149 passengers and eight crew on board at the time. Cockpit data indicated that the plane's airspeed indicator had malfunctioned on its previous four flights.

It also mentioned the Indonesia Lion Air flight, which crashed after takeoff from Jakarta in October, killing all 189 people on board.

The reason for the crash is not yet known.

The Boeing 737 Max 8 was one of 30 being delivered to the airline, Boeing said in a statement in July when the first was delivered. The decision was made before USA investigators reached the crash site, the Journal said.

Cleveland Browns signing DT Sheldon Richardson
Richardson is expected to part of a defensive line rotation that features Myles Garrett , Emmanuel Ogbah and Larry Ogunjobi . Schefter says Richardson is signing a three-year deal with the Cleveland Browns when free agency opens Wednesday.

The crash shattered more than two years of relative calm in African skies, where travel had always been chaotic. Ethiopian Airlines said the senior pilot issued a distress call and was told to return but all contact was lost shortly afterward.

The plane, a Boeing 737 Max 8, had flown from Johannesburg to Addis Ababa earlier Sunday morning without incident.

Operation of the model will only resume after "confirming the relevant measures to effectively ensure flight safety", the administration said in a statement. Sunburned travelers and tour groups crowd the Addis Ababa airport's waiting areas, along with businessmen from China and elsewhere.

Ethiopian officials declared Monday a day of mourning. Southwest Airlines flies 31 MAX 8 jets while American Airlines and Air Canada each have 24 in their fleet.

The jet's last maintenance was on February 4, and it had flown just 1,200 hours.

Facebook, Instagram down for millions worldwide
More than a third of Facebook users affected by the outage reported that they were experiencing a 'total blackout'. Users were reporting the issues on Twitter and the reports were also appearing on the website Down Detector .

"Safety is our No. 1 priority and we are taking every measure to fully understand all aspects of this accident, working closely with the investigating team and all regulatory authorities involved", Boeing said in a statement.

"Ethiopian is Africa's biggest airline, and recently the airport in Addis Ababa overtook Dubai as the leading gateway to sub-Saharan Africa", Peralta reports.

Air traffic monitor Flightradar24 reported that the plane's "vertical speed was unstable after take-off".

Speaking at the inauguration, the prime minister challenged the airline to build a new "Airport City" terminal in Bishoftu - where Sunday's crash occurred.
