"We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps", the spokesperson said.

Euronews has reached out to Facebook for comment but did not receive a reply at the time of publication.

Some users reported problems accessing Instagram as well, and downdetector.com indicated an outage among some users, mostly concentrated in the northeast.

Facebook continues to work on the issue affecting its family of apps.

Facebook is experiencing the worst outage in its history, with essential services left unusable for global users.

BBC Silicon Valley correspondent Dave Lee said the length and severity of the outage is unprecedented. The desktop/browser version of Instagram also appears to be down.

People across the world were unable to access Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Whatsapp for about 14 hours.

Angry users expressed their frustration on Twitter writing, "There is some serious problem with Instagram".

A Facebook spokesman confirmed the partial outage, but did not provide an update.
