Facebook's massive outage was the result of a server configuration change

Facebook's massive outage was the result of a server configuration change

Users flocked to Twitter to let the company know what they thought about the outage. "We're working to resolve the issue as soon as possible", Facebook tweeted around 2 p.m. ET.

After staying tight-lipped on the cause of the outage for almost 24 hours, Facebook early Thursday afternoon blamed it on a "server configuration change that triggered a cascading series of issues".

Facebook is "very sorry" for what appeared to be the longest-ever rolling outage of its service: The social media giant apologized for a technical error that left many users globally unable to access apps for Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp starting Wednesday and stretching into Thursday.

Celebrations and promotions have surged in the United States since Congress passed a resolution supporting March 14 as Pi Day . You're in luck-California Pizza Kitchen will offer slices of its Key Lime Pie for (spoiler alert:) $3.14 (pre-tax) on Thursday.

Pointing out that the Facebook outage also extended to its other properties, including Instagram and WhatsApp, Sarah Miller, the deputy director at the Open Markets Institute, which is for the break-up of Facebook and other Silicon Valley companies, said, "The more integrated a platform becomes, the greater the risk and reach of epic failures like this one". This is an important draw for people concerned with their privacy online, particularly in light of the fact that Facebook, Inc.is reportedly now under criminal investigation for secret data sharing deals.

Separately, the New York Times reported on Wednesday that US federal prosecutors were conducting a criminal investigation into data deals Facebook struck with more than 150 technology companies such as Amazon.com Inc and Apple Inc.

Thousands of users took to Twitter over the past day to complain about the outage, causing the hashtag #facebookdown to trend.

It's just feeling how the vehicle handles and how the balance is, we know there is definitely more to come. We won't know for sure until this weekend. "We'll see, but I haven't really thought that much about it".

According to the BBC, the outage is the worst in Facebook's history.

Facebook declined to add to the company statement on Twitter. The federal investigation is the latest bad news coming from the company's data privacy scandals. And Spotify and Netflix reportedly were allowed to see user private message information.

Federal prosecutors are investigating data-sharing deals struck between Facebook and makers of mobile computing devices. But a criminal investigation would raise the stakes significantly.
