Jussie Smollett arrives in sunglasses at the Leighton Criminal Court Building for his hearing Thursday in Chicago. Prosecutors claimed during a hearing that same day that Smollett had paid two brothers - Abimbola "Abel" Osundairo, who played Jamal's love interest on the Fox drama, and Olabinjo "Ola" Osundairo, an extra - to stage the attack.
Jussie Smollett pleaded not guilty to 16 felony counts Thursday morning in Cook County, Ill., the Associated Press reported. Chicago police pushed back and accused Smollett of faking the letter as well.
Smollett's next hearing was scheduled for April 17.
"Empire" producers chose to remove Smollett's character, Jamal, from the final two episodes of the season.
Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp down across the world
"We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps", the spokesperson said. Facebook is experiencing the worst outage in its history, with essential services left unusable for global users.
One of Smollett's attorneys, Mark Geragos, responded to the indictment in a statement to ET. He is charged with 16 counts of disorderly conduct. Details in some of those statements were different, the indictment says. "(4) Transmits or causes to be transmitted in any manner to any peace officer, public officer or public employee a report to the effect that an offense will be committed, is being committed, or has been committed, knowing at the time of the transmission that there is no reasonable ground for believing that the offense will be committed, is being committed, or has been committed". This redundant and vindictive indictment is nothing more than a desperate attempt to make headlines in order to distract from the internal investigation launched to investigate the outrageous leaking of false information by the Chicago Police Department and the shameless and illegal invasion of Jussie's privacy in tampering with his medical records.
The actor was arrested February 21, and police said at a media briefing that Smollett had faked the attack because he was "dissatisfied" with his salary for playing Jamal Lyon on "Empire". A decision on whether he will remain with the show beyond that has not been made.
