The company announced it's planning to shift its focus towards privacy and protecting users' information, something it has failed to do in recent times.

Cox worked on some of Facebook's key products, including the social network's News Feed, and led the product and design teams.

"It is with great sadness I share with you that after thirteen years, I've made a decision to leave the company", Cox wrote in his post.

In his blog post, Zuckerberg said that Cox had told him several years ago that he planned to move on, but that Cox chose to hold off on leaving until the company made more progress combating misinformation and Russian interference - controversies that erupted in the wake of the 2016 election.

Manchester United may have to reverse Champions League fixture
Liverpool have previously taken part in six quarter-finals in the Champions League era, all of which have been post-2000. Barcelona booked their place in the Champions League last eight on Wednesday night after defeating Lyon 5-1 at Camp Nou.

After CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg, Cox is the third highest-ranking executive at Facebook, representing the engineering and product sides of the company.

Cox, who dropped out of a Stanford University graduate degree program to work with Zuckerberg when the company had just 15 engineers, was widely seen as one of the most popular and capable executives at the social network - and a potential replacement CEO, were Zuckerberg to leave.

Fidji Simo, head of video, games and monetization, will be the new head of the Facebook app, Mark Zuckerberg said in a blogpost.

Cox "is a great guy who is someone who has always tried to do good", said David Kirkpatrick, an author who became well acquainted with Cox and Zuckerberg while writing a book about Facebook.

The departures of Cox and Daniels come a day after a technical issue that limited use of Facebook and Instagram for most of Wednesday. Instead, the leaders of the Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram apps that Cox oversaw will report to Zuckerberg. Once its other apps are included, this rises to 2.7...

Facebook's family of apps strategy has so far been led jointly by Cox and Javier Olivan, vice president of growth. Zuckerberg is also promising to make photos and posts automatically disappear from public view. In a memo to employees, Zuckerberg suggested the events were linked. Daniels led WhatsApp for 10 months, after replacing co-founder Jan Koum, who left the company in April after clashing with Zuckerberg over a plan to loosen privacy and encryption.
