Queer Google developer smashes pi world record

15 March 2019, 02:55 | Hattie Nash

Emma Haruka Iwao a Google employee calculated 31,415,926,535,897 digits of pi setting a world record

Google employee breaks record for calculating

Iwao's calculation took 121 days to finish and needed 25 virtual machines.

Her milestone was certified by Guinness World Records on Wednesday, making her the third woman to set a world record for calculating the number.

"The biggest challenge with pi is that it requires a lot of storage and memory to calculate", Haruka Iwao said.

Emma and Google have shown that Google Cloud computing can be used to solve many complex mathematical problems and this is only the beginning of what is possible.

Lori Loughlin released on $1 million bond in college admissions bribery scandal
It is said that the students involved did not know about their parents' collusion with the scam, and are not being prosecuted. If she wants to ball out on a yacht as the world falls in around her, then that's more than fine with me.

Iwao found the digits with the help of Google Cloud in the Japanese city of Osaka, some 400km west of Tokyo, where she works as a developer and advocate. You can be one of the 31.4-TRILLION pieces of artwork made for Pi Day on Google's behalf!

In 2016, Peter Trueb set the world record for the greatest number of digits of pi ever calculated by generating 22.4 trillion digits.

Pi, which is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, is commonly recognized for its first few digits, but the numbers go on until infinity.

The contstant is used in engineering, physics, supercomputing and space exploration - because its value can be used in calculations for waves and circles.

Dynamo Kiev vs Chelsea, Europa League Round of 16, second leg
It's really risky to play any football here in this moment, and I think it's really very unsafe for injuries. I think Ruben has absolutely everything and to be fair he's had a few injury problems this season.

Ms Iwao said she had been fascinated by the number since she had been a child.

When I think of pi, I think of three digits: 3.14. This is nearly 9 trillion digits more than the previous world record, which was set in November 2016 by Peter Trueb. The interesting thing about Pi is that it's value is infinite in length.

Pi Day, March 14, is a great excuse to seek out your favorite pie and indulge yourself in a warm, flaky crust with apple, cherry, chocolate, or whatever your favorite filling is. This is the first time the cloud has been used to calculate Pi to this magnitude.

Talking about her journey, she says, "When I was a kid, I didn't have access to supercomputers".
