'Shots fired' near mosque in New Zealand

Members of the Bangladeshi cricket team have escaped a shooting at a mosque near Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

Bangladesh's strength and conditioning coach Mario Villavarayen said the players were shaken up.

New Zealand police deployed armed officers in central Christchurch on Friday after reports shots had been fired, police said, and witnesses at a mosque told media of many casualties.

One man said the scene at the mosque was chaotic with as many as 40 people injured.

Police placed all of the city's schools on lockdown amid the incident. calling a "serious ongoing firearms incident".

Facebook's massive outage was the result of a server configuration change

Earlier, Mohammad Isam - a reporter associated with ESPN Cricinfo - had written on Twitter that the "Bangladesh team [he is assigned to] escaped from a mosque near Hagley Park where there were active shooters".

Several minutes after they were barred from getting off the bus, the players escaped and ran through Hagley Park.

Shootings were reported at the Al Noor Mosque, the Linwood Masjid mosque and Christchurch Hospital.

Two police officers have confirmed that the bomb is inside a beige Subaru that has crashed on the street, roughly three kilometres from the Al Noor Mosque where the shooting took place.
