Berry, the fifth-overall pick out of Tennessee in 2010, has been one of the league's best safeties when he's been healthy enough to play.

Outside linebacker Justin Houston was released last week and outside linebacker Dee Ford will be traded to the San Francisco 49ers.

Mathieu effectively replaces Berry, whose contract still will count $6.95 million against the salary cap this year and $8 million next year as a designated post-June 1 cut.
