River levels will be on the rise through Friday night with a few expected to reach flood stage over NE Iowa and many others to come close to flood stage. The flooding was the worst in almost a decade in places, though the situation was expected to improve quickly over the weekend, according to Mike Gillispie, National Weather Service hydrologist in Sioux Falls.
Flooding in the central US on Friday swamped small towns, forced some residents along waterways to evacuate, threatened to temporarily close a nuclear power plant and shut down stretches of a major river and an interstate highway, foreshadowing a hard spring flooding season.
A flood warning issued Wednesday by the National Weather Service in Des Moines remains in effect until 10:15 a.m. Thursday for Dallas and Guthrie counties. The plant itself sits 903 feet above sea level.
As of 6.15pm today, there were 57 flood warnings and 68 flood alerts in place across England, mostly concentrated in the north and west.
Cooper Nuclear Station, a nuclear power plant in Nebraska, took precautions as the Missouri River continued to rise.
"It's going to be a busy couple of months of flooding along the Missouri River", said Scott Watson, staff hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill. After that, river flooding will be a big concern by the end of the week and weekend.
"If it melts all at once, that's not good", Watson said.
"The worst is past us now".
The late winter "bomb cyclone" that stunned more than 25 states with snow, rain and wind has caused flooding that is threatening the operational safety of a nuclear power plant in southeast Nebraska. He said usually the reservoirs along the northern Missouri basin can handle the excess snowfall, which the mountains experienced in 2011.
In Wisconsin, Governor Tony Evers said flooding was impacting "homes, businesses, and cities and towns" across the state.
