Pallister government to launch court challenge against federal carbon tax

Manitoba will challenge federal carbon tax in court

The premier confirmed that immediately after unveiling its Made-in-Manitoba Climate and Green Plan, and on multiple occasions after that, Manitoba sought the federal government's assurance that it would not impose its tax on Manitobans.

Saskatchewan challenged the constitutional authority of the federal government to impose the levy in a court case earlier this year. Pallister said that the federal government has given special treatment and exemptions to other provinces and that is unfair to Manitobans.

"We hope that, regardless of what happens in court, Manitobans aren't stuck with a carbon tax", he said. This amount of money could also fund over 3,300 pacemaker implantations. "Hospitals should be able to focus their resources on providing the quality, patient-centred care that Ontarians expect and deserve, and not have to deal with unnecessary rising operational costs".

Trump says NOISE from windmills causes cancer and Twitter goes into meltdown
A 2014 study found there are some risks to sustained exposure to noise from wind turbines, including sleep disturbance. On Wednesday, comedian Stephen Colbert mocked President Donald Trump for saying that windmills can cause cancer .

The Manitoba government will challenge the federal carbon tax in court. Through the efforts of individuals and industry, Ontario is already most of the way to this target, with the province's emissions down 22 per cent since 2005.

"Premier Pallister flip-flopped, choosing to tear up his own climate plan". "Ontario deserves both a healthy environment and a healthy economy".

"There is no justification for the federal government to have rejected Manitoba's plan while approving less effective plans from other provinces".

Starting January 1, 2019, the federal government's output-based pricing system for large emitters came into force. However, federal GST will be applied on the federal carbon tax on home owners' utility bills. It will increase by $10 ($7.49) a year until it reaches C$50 ($37.43) a ton in 2022.

The carbon tax went into effect Monday in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick.

The Made In Ontario Environment Plan was introduced in the legislature last November, and is making its way through the legislative process now.
