Police said the 22-year-old had gone to the tower with friends about 3am

A school spokesman said the tower was off limits to students, "always locked" and that they were looking into whether the lock had been tampered with. "He told me some seniors (wanted to go) to the tower to take some pictures and have a good time before graduating".

A United States university student has died after she fell more than 12 metres from a campus bell tower in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A student, named only as Dave, who met Sydney and her friends hours before the tragedy, said: "My roommate was with them".

According to USA media reports, Ms Monfries slipped on her way up the tower's spiral staircase and was found by emergency services at about 3.17am.

Infinity Ward and Respawn co-founder Jason West has joined Epic Games
This will be the first gaming project that Jason West will be a part of since his departure from Respawn Entertainment . Epic will continue to make more games in the future, but with West tagging along, who knows what'll come out next?

"I heard they were just getting a better view of the city", one senior student said.

Fordham's president said in an email to the university community that Monfries would be awarded a posthumous bachelor's degree.

Christopher Rodgers, dean of students at Rose Hill, told The Ram in 2013 that since "the clock tower is rather unsafe, and therefore secured area of campus, students would likely face disciplinary action if they entered it".

Students said climbing the tower, touching the bell and taking photos of the sweeping views, were part of a senior-year "rite of passage", according to the paper. She fell 40 feet through the inside of the tower and struck her head on the ground.

She was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in serious condition.

According to the university's website, Fordham University is a Jesuit, Catholic institution focused on instilling students with "wisdom, experience, morality, critical thinking and creative problem-solving".
