USA measles cases surge again as outbreak nears record
16 April 2019, 04:11 | Silvia Roy
USA federal health officials said on Monday the number of confirmed cases of measles in the United States this year jumped by almost 20% in the week ended 11 April - the country's second-worst outbreak in almost two decades. Scientists are concerned measles could return even though it was "eliminated" in the USA 20 years ago.
The city hasn't revealed all the information surrounding the current outbreak, including the number of cases, the suit claims.
States that have reported cases to CDC include NY, where there have been outbreaks in Brooklyn and Rockland County, New Jersey, Connecticut and MA.
So far this year, 170 countries have reported 112,163 measles cases to WHO. The World Health Organization reported Monday there were more than 110,000 measles cases worldwide in the first three months of 2019 - an increase of almost 300% from the same period past year.
While vaccines are required for school children across the country, nearly all states allow exemptions for families who say it's against their religious beliefs, and 17 states allow a parent to opt out for philosophical or personal reasons. According to the CDC, there was an average of 6,000 measles-related deaths each year within the first decade of the disease being reported.
Measles, which is highly contagious, can be entirely prevented through a two-dose vaccine, but the World Health Organization has in recent months sounded the alarm over declining global vaccination rates. The city said those individuals who become infected with measles and chose not to get vaccinated since the mandatory order would be fined $1,000 dollars.
They added: "More than 20 million lives have been saved through measles vaccination since the year 2000 alone". His research was found to be based on fraudulent data, the study was retracted, and the doctor lost his medical license. "That's been proven. There is no association whatsoever between the measles vaccine and autism".
The CDC recommends that all children get two doses of measles vaccine.
