Hazlewood and Handscomb were instead named in Australia's "A" squad for their tour of England starting in June, which will provide opportunities for players to make their case to be included in the Ashes squad.

Australian coach Justin Langer has credited the successful reintegration process in UAE after the series against India for the return of Steve Smith and David Warner to the Australian side for the World Cup.

It is the first call-up for the former captain and his deputy since the expiry last month of year-long bans for their part in "sandpaper-gate" in Cape Town that had wide repercussions for Australian cricket.

Now the duo, who have played in this season's Indian Premier League (IPL), will return to the worldwide stage in the tournament in England and Wales, which starts on May 30.

Smith and Warner are now playing for Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively in the IPL after serving their 12-month ban for their role in the ball-tampering scandal that rocked Australian cricket previous year.

Bill Weld becomes first Republican to challenge Donald Trump in 2020
The Republican National Committee in January issued a nonbinding resolution to declare the party's undivided support for Trump. Weld has not won a political race since being re-elected governor by a landslide in his heavily Democratic state in 1994.

A statement released by the Australia chairman of selectors, Trevor Hohns, said that while Hazlewood would miss out on the World Cup he would be a key member in the Ashes, which starts two weeks after the conclusion of the mega-event.

With Warner's incredible form in the IPL, it seemed nearly impossible for him to miss out on selection.

"As far as I'm concerned they have done everything that's been asked of them in the last 12 months", said one-day skipper Aaron Finch, adding that he didn't believe their return would be destabilising. The decision to drop him means the team only has one wicketkeeper in Alex Carey.

Meanwhile, pacer Hazlewood, who is out of action since January due to injury, was confident of recovering before the World Cup but the selectors chose to give him rest keeping Ashes in mid.

Spinners Nathan Lyon and Adam Zampa have made the cut, with selectors going for the pace of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jhye Richardson and Jason Behrendorff, who has been in fine form in the IPL.

Starc and Richardson have both been selected subject to fitness.

Another big name to miss out is fast bowler Josh Hazlewood.

Meanwhile Langer has said he will "mix and match" the three opening options of Warner, Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja in three warm-up games against New Zealand in Brisbane.

Australia "A" one-day: Travis Head (captain), Matthew Wade, Will Pucovski, Peter Handscomb, Ashton Turner, Mitch Marsh, D'Arcy Short, Kurtis Patterson, Ashton Agar, Michael Neser, James Pattinson, Josh Hazlewood, Kane Richardson, Sean Abbott.
