Eat well, exercise more: New global guidelines to reduce risk of dementia

In recommendations to counter an expected tripling in the number of people with the degenerative condition in the next 30 years, the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines are created to help medical professionals and governments to develop national policies.

Key lifestyle choices such as getting regular exercise, not smoking or drinking too much, can reduce the risk of dementia and cognitive decline, the United Nations health agency has said.

"The scientific evidence gathered for these Guidelines confirm what we have suspected for some time, that what is good for our heart, is also good for our brain".

The WHO also noted that dietary supplements, such as vitamins B and E, do not counter cognitive decline.

"The costs of caring for people with dementia are estimated to rise to two trillion USA dollars annually by 2030", the organisation said. The report said that although age is the strongest known risk factor for cognitive decline, dementia is not a natural or inevitable effect of ageing. As for its causes, Alzheimer's disease is one of the most common causes of dementia and is the leading cause of death in the U.S.

"During the last two decades, several studies have shown a relationship between the development of cognitive impairment and dementia with educational attainment, and lifestyle-related risk factors, such as physical inactivity, tobacco use, unhealthy diets and harmful use of alcohol", it said.
