The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has so far reported more than 800 cases of measles nationwide this year. They're spread across a lot of the USA, but about half of these cases are in New York City.

Of the 75 new cases, 66 were reported in New York, with 25 in Rockland County and 41 in New York City, according to CNN. Years later, one of Dr. Forman's patients died from an extremely rare complication from measles called subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

This year's total is inching closer to the number of cases reported, 963, in 1994, which is the highest annually in the last 25 years. Cases in those states occurred primarily among unvaccinated people in Orthodox Jewish communities.

Officials in New York City and Rockland County - where almost 700 people combined have contracted measles since late past year - have taken measures such as declaring emergencies over the issue and implementing bans on unvaccinated minors in certain schools or public places.

New York City and Rockland County have each taken separate steps to contain the outbreak. A few years earlier, he'd founded the Children's Health Fund to bring health care to New York City's poorest areas. NY became the first state to require a measles booster shot, which is now required across the country and is said by the CDC to increase the effectiveness of the vaccine from 93% to 97%. "We have to identify anyone who's been in contact with that particular case, find out their vaccine status".

The CDC recommends two doses of the MMR vaccine: the first dose for children when they are between 12 and 15 months old and the second when children are 4 to 6 years old.

"Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of getting infected when they travel internationally", the CDC says. Those born before 1957 are assumed to have had measles and are therefore immune and don't need to be vaccinated.
