Gov. Jared Polis has declared Wednesday Kendrick Castillo Day in Colorado, writing on Twitter that his bravery wouldn't be forgotten.
Castillo and classmates Brendan Bialy and Joshua Jones were credited with helping minimize the bloodshed by charging at one of the suspects in a classroom.
"We're going to hear about very heroic things that have taken place at the school", Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said shortly after the shooting. An armed security guard responded to last week's shooting. The official did not address whether anyone was hit.
Investigators are also probing whether a a private security guard at the school, Shamson Sundara, mistakenly fired at least one shot at a Douglas County Sheriff's deputy and whether he wounded a student.
Erickson's defense attorneys said in court that they have yet to see any of the evidence in the case, and waived the requirement for a preliminary hearing within 35 days. McKinney is now held at a juvenile facility and will remain there, regardless of the adult charges. It's not clear how soon that could happen. A spokeswoman for El Paso County District Attorney Dan May declined to comment.

Colorado prosecutors have charged the students suspected of opening fire at their school with murder and attempted murder and other counts and are pursuing adult charges against the younger suspect.
Appearing in court on Wednesday, prosecutors identified Alec McKinney as the previously unnamed juvenile accused of going on a rampage at the Highlands Ranch STEM School, alongside his alleged 18-year-old accomplice, Devon Erickson.
A memorial service for the student killed, 18-year-old Kendrick Castillo, is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at a Highlands Ranch church.
Erickson was ordered to return to court on June 7 for a status hearing.
Devon Erickson, the accused STEM School Highlands Ranch shooter, appears at the Douglas County Courthouse in Castle Rock, Colo., on May 8, 2019. His face was visible, and he looked forward toward the judge while attorneys discussed the case.

Maccagnan compiled a 24-40 record during his tenure as Jets GM, with the team slumping to 4-12 last season. Douglas is close to Gase and has been discussed in NFL circles as a candidate for jobs around the league.
Both suspects in the STEM School shooting appeared separately in court Wednesday morning to be formally charged in connection to the May 7 attack that killed one student and wounded eight others.
While court documents are sealed, the names of charges against the gunmen were listed in electronic court records without any more details. McKinney's attorney, Ara Ohanian, said she would seek to move McKinney's case back to juvenile court.
A line of Jeeps and trucks stretched along a Highlands Ranch roadway ahead of the service to honor Castillo, who was a Jeep and off-road vehicle enthusiast.
The only difference between the two suspects' charges are related to a firearm.
