Greenpeace have said that the protestors were calling on Prime Minister Scott Morrison to "declare a climate emergency". It's thought that six people scaled the bridge.

Police initially made 10 arrests while three others continued to hang beneath the bridge.

Infighting over how to address climate change has marked the coalition's six years in power, with an influential right-wing base demanding Morrison support Australia's coal industry, and the government has struggled to convince voters of its commitment to tackling the issue.

Lane eight of the bridge was briefly closed due to the police operation but soon re-opened.
