Alabama passes the most restrictive abortion law in US history

Alabama governor signs bill, banning virtually all abortions, into law

Andrew Koenig described it on Thursday as "one of the strongest" abortion bills yet passed in the U.S.

"What I'm trying to do here is get this case in front of the Supreme Court so Roe v. Wade can be overturned", says Alabama state Rep. Terri Collins (R). "And so the time to act is now".

Warren also threw her support behind an existing bill that would block so-called TRAP laws, which place a host of restrictions on abortion services in an effort to limit access. When I think about the fact that women might have to face abortions in even worse conditions than I did because of new laws, my stomach turns."Actor and politician Cynthia Nixon said her mother underwent a "harrowing" backstreet abortion before the procedure was made legal, joining thousands who tweeted under #youknowme."In 2010, my wife had a legal abortion after we found out her pregnancy was not viable", she also wrote in the post."We can not and will not go back."British actor and presenter Jameela Jamil said that having an abortion in her youth was the "best decision I have ever made" and predicted that Alabama's law would lead to "chaos"."Hope the people of Alabama who want the abortion ban are up for donating their money and space to the MEGA influx of kids in need of care, coming your way", she wrote". Doctors who perform the procedure would be charged with a Class A felony which could see a prison sentence of life to 99 years.

Outnumbered Missouri Senate Democrats launched into an attack on the bill before Republican supporters had a chance to bring it up for debate on the Senate floor. "These bans will be deadly, endanger pregnant people's lives, and criminalize doctors and health care providers for simply doing their jobs and providing care", says Tarah Demant, the Director of the the Gender, Sexuality and Identity Program at Amnesty International USA. "These bans on safe, legal abortion will have real costs - expensive legal costs and human costs for the women and families who need reproductive health care".

In its Roe v. Wade decision, the Supreme Court noted that viability typically was 24 to 28 weeks.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Ky., also parted ways with Alabama lawmakers on the issue, although he did not specifically weigh in on the new law.

Here's what Warren's abortion plan proposes.

Missouri's bill also includes an outright ban on abortions except in cases of medical emergencies.

How will opponents of the Alabama law and bills passed in other states restricting abortion attempt to stop such laws, and what's the likelihood that one of these cases makes it to the Supreme Court? Some required abortion clinics to meet the same requirements as ambulatory surgical centers, including having certain room sizes and hallway widths.

Many celebrities and public figures joined in on the hashtag, including the former head of Planned Parenthood Cecile Richards, actress Amber Tamblyn, model Tess Holliday and former NY gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon.

While most networks did ignore the clear extremism on display with the NY abortion law, "NBC Nightly News" actually hailed the law as "good news" in the fight for abortion rights, according to LifeNews.

Almost one in four women in the United States will undergo an abortion by the age of 45, though the overall USA abortion rate dropped by 25 percent between 2008 and 2014 - from 19.3 to 14.6 per 1,000 women, according to Guttmacher Institute research published in 2017 in the American Journal of Public Health. "Congress should act to ensure that the will of the people remains the law of the land".

Gillibrand also pledged to end the Hyde Amendment, a legislative provision that prohibits the use of federal funds for any health benefits coverage that includes abortion.

Senators Cory Booker of New Jersey and Kirsten Gillibrand of NY also have endorsed the codification of abortion rights, while Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Indiana, said Thursday that such a move "deserves to be taken seriously". The author of the bill makes it clear the intent is to go after the person performing the abortion.
