Kami Rita climbs Mount Everest for record 23rd time
18 May 2019, 04:50 | Glen Norman
NIRANJAN SHRESTHA APThere are 378 climbers permitted to scale Everest this year alongside sherpas like Kami Rita
Mountaineer Kami Rita Sherpa, who is 49, managed to reach the summit of the tallest mountain in the world on Tuesday.
"Kami Rita Sherpa from Thame village of Solukhumbu district successfully climbed Mt Everest at around 7:50 am from Nepal side breaking his own record for most summits on the roof of the world", Mingma Sherpa, Company Chairman at Seven Summit Treks, was quoted as saying by the paper.
On May 16, 2018, Kami Rita made history by summiting Everest for the 22nd time.
Kami Rita has already climbed most of the peaks above 8,000 m including K2, Cho-oyu, Lhoste and Annapurna among others.
"I have a goal to climb Everest for 25th time - or maybe more than that", he told Efe news in April before leaving for his expedition.
Rita reached the summit with other climbers on Wednesday morning and all of them were reported to be safe, said Gyanendra Shrestha, a Nepalese government official at the mountain's base camp.
And, a Nepali guide has been assigned, who will be showing the path to 750 climbers to the top of the 8,850-metre (29,035-foot) peak in the coming weeks.
Brooks Koepka sets the target at Bethpage Black
Tiger Woods, playing in the same group as Koepka, started at 2 over and was trying to make sure he at least made the cut . He bogied four of his first five holes on the back nine and couldn't make up ground.
Sherpa set the record by climbing the hard and majestic mountain from the Nepal side. After that tragedy, he came under intense family pressure to quit mountaineering altogether, but in the end decided against it.
Rita has been an advocate for other Sherpa guides, who he said do not get the recognition they are due.
Sherpa, 49, reached the summit Wednesday morning, breaking his own record that he set previous year, his expedition company confirmed. "I did not even know you could set records earlier", he said last month before setting off for Everest base camp.
Sherpa tribespeople were mostly yak herders and traders living deep within the Himalayas until Nepal opened its borders in the 1950s.
