Rain spoils West Indies World Cup match

Cricket World Cup: South Africa v West Indies match rained off

Faf Du Plessis hopes the storm around AB De Villiers' offer to come out of retirement can give South Africa the "direction" to revive their ailing World Cup.

Rain had been predicted in Southampton, with the match the second of the tournament to be washed out after Sri Lanka versus Pakistan was abandoned without a ball being bowled in Bristol.

Only 7.3 overs were bowled at Hampshire's Rose Bowl on Monday after West Indies skipper Jason Holder won the toss and sent South Africa in to bat, expecting the Duckworth-Lewis run-rate calculator to come into play with heavy rain in the forecast.

He rested due to concussion symptoms for the game against Bangladesh, but then could only make a pair of 6s against India and the West Indies in Southampton.

This lack of confidence in their ability has filtered through to the pitch, with De Kock's 68 against England remaining South Africa's top score in the competition.

The Faf du Plessis-led side have got off to a worst possible start, with just one point to their name from four encounters.

Senior batsmen such as Hashim Amla and JP Duminy have yet to get out of the starting blocks, while youngsters such as Aiden Markram has looked like a deer in the headlights.

But three deliveries into Oshane Thomas' first over, rain forced the players off the field before umpires called off the game.

West Indies coach Floyd Reifer refused to lament a victory opportunity lost, instead insisting his side will continue their aggressive approach. Both teams wanted to play and get results but you can't control the weather.

South Africa will now face Afghanistan this Sunday at 12.30am while West Indies will take on England 9.30pm this Friday.

Du Plessis added: "He will be disappointed he got out, but he has been hitting the ball really well in the nets so we just are hoping it's around the corner for him".

"I feel like we are batting well but we just haven't done it long enough".

"We are hoping he pulls up alright".

"If we do that, and the results start one by one happening, then this team will get a lot of confidence from that for the later stages".

ESPNcricinfo had reported first how the offer was made by de Villiers in May, just a day before South Africa selectors announced their final 15-member squad for the prestigious quadrennial event.
