Mexico eyes Brazil on US asylum deal Trump reiterates tariff threat

The plan to levy tariffs came to a halt after Mexico and the USA reached an agreement to curb illegal immigration.

Contrary to Mexico's foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard's comments of no secret deal with the United States, as reported by New York Times, Jabin Botsford, Staff Photographer at The Washington Post, and VICE news, gave details of the deal waved at them recently.

The document that Trump waved at reporters laid out "a regional approach to burden-sharing in relation to the processing of refugee status claims to migrants"; talked of "45 days"; and said Mexico had committed to immediately examine its laws and rules to enable it to implement such an agreement.

If, after 45 days, the U.S. government "determines at its discretion" that the results aren't enough, the document says, "the Government of Mexico will take all necessary steps under domestic law to bring the agreement into force".

Besides, the Mexico's Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard had been quoted saying on his Monday's (June 11th) speech that such measures to involve Brazil and Panama into their asylum deal would require, if number of illegal migrants entering into United States soil through its southern border failed to decline within a timeframe of one and a half months.
